Our settings board for our film

We have chosen to film our film in the woodlands because ;
  • The woods are mysterious
  • The woods are where people can do activites without being seen.
  • The woods are vast and open meaning it is a conincidence if you bump into anyone.
  • The woods have spots of lights which go through the trees.
  • The woods are great for filming chase because they have trees which have fallen down and they can act as obsticles to the chase making subspence in the film.
  • The woods can get dark quickly and children are generally scared of the woods
  • Police never venture into the woods only if someone has reported something in the woods and plus the character's would be all by themselves with no-one around them to help them.

These are shots in our film which show the woods that the film has been set in, this allows the viewer to know where they are and where the action is happening. I think having the film set in the woods is a good setting because this made our actors feel like they were secluded from the world and if anything happened then there would be no-one around to help them get out of the mess. So overall i think that this was a brilliaint setting for our film.

In our film we have also have another setting with the main boy character sat at the computer when the character falls asleep. We have chose this setting because this will link to the end of the film when the audience will see why Sam is sat at the computer and the point for him being there in the first place is. This setting shows that Sam has moved on from the woods setting and something important in that scene is going to happen.

In doing this i have learnt that the setting for a film is important because the setting itself can help the viewer feel emotions before any action has even started. This means that the director can channel the emotions he/she would like the viewer to feel before the action.

Script for our film.

In the start of our opening scene a lot of key important actions happen, although not a lot of key actions happen through the dialogue, dialogue is still important and we need a script so that the actors can know there lines in the film. This is the script that goes with the dialogue in our film;

Key = B1 = Main boy character
          M1 = Main bad character
          M2 = secondry main character

                                          B1 is sat at the computer typing away and starts to feel tired so B1 falls asleep at the computer.

There is a flashback and B1 is walking through the woods just dawdling about. Parallel to this M1 and M2 are walking through the woods and come across the spot.

M1 = Dig here!

M2 = Great place boss

M2 starts to dig whilst M1 looks around, parallel to this B1 is behind a tree over looking over the action.
After a while M2 finishes digging.

M2 = Done Boss

M1 places the package into the ground and M1 and M2 walk off.

B1 walks over to the package and investigates what they have buried but gets caugh by M1 and M2

M2= Hey!

B1 runs off through the woods.

After a short amount of running B1 falls over but M1 and M2 catches up with him. M1 stands on his head and cuts to black.

B1 awakes from being at the computer. And types "Area 51" into google.

B1 finds the picture of the alien and stands up from being at the computer.

Titles appear.

This is our script for our film, this has set the dialouge for our film and i have written instructions where dialouge should be said within the scene. This has helped a lot with out film and when we film we will not need to come up with dialogue. Saving time and we can put more time into our film and not into thinking of dialogue.

Our audience research

As part of our task we have to research our target audience, in doing this i have made a questionaire online and published this on to the web. There is a hyperlink to the questionaire below. In hoping to do audience research i will find out what our target audience think of the action thriller genre and also what other audiences think of the genre aswell;

Click here to see the questionaire ;        http://app.fluidsurveys.com/surveys/kyrand123-T/media-studies-action-thriller-films/?TEST_DATA

From doing this i have learnt that the audience like having their action thrillers at the age of 18, this means that i am able to get trid of all guidlines to my film. in also doing this i can create the proper affect of the action thriller, in the terms of gore and swearing. I have also learnt that their is quite a lot of debate about wether to have a child under the age of 18 die or get injured in our film. We may have to go into more research about this and see wether this would be appropriate.

My institutional research and Production/Distribution

I think that Universal home entertainment or 20th Centuary fox will distiribute my film because these are both huge companies which have made films. People can tell they make great films because they are well known and they are funded huge amounts of money. I think that both of these companies will be great to distribute my film because they have both funded other action thrillers such as "The Hitcher" and "The Taken".

20th Centuary Fox

Universal Home studios

I think that both of these companies will be great to distribute my film because they have both funded other action thrillers such as "The Hitcher" and "The Taken".  Both of these films have done well in the cinema world as being action thrillers. Also the same target audience for both of these films are the same as my action thriller and i think that they would appeal to my film.

The Taken

The Hitcher

The  Distribution that will be involved...

For my film i will dirstibute my film to a wide audience, to do this i have to select the cinema which spand across the country so that a mass audience can watch my film. I will distrubute my film to the UK and America, i have known from my own knowledge that most UK cinema's are owned by the Americans so by teaming with the Americans means i can show the audience my film and make increase the chances of making a profit. In the Uk i have decided that "Vue" will show my film's in their cinema and in America i will distribute my film to "AMC theatre". These are 2 huge companies in the UK and America attracting a huge range of audience.

Vue

AMC Theatres

I think that by distributing my film to these companies will make my film sell tickets and mean that my film will be available to a huge range of auidience. By putting my film with these cinema's will be a great decision.

By researching about Institutions and Distributions means that i have clear knowledge in how my film is going to sell and which institution will fund my film, Also i have clear knowledge in where my film will be shown and what audience i am going to show my film to.

What is the BBFC and what must i do to fit into the correct classifications for my film?

The BBFC guidlines to films help prevent people of a certain age group from watching the film, this means that not anyone can watch any type of film. The BBFC has classifications to certain films, these classifications are ; U, PG, 12A, 12, 15, 18, 18R
  • U - This means that anyone can watch this film of any age from a new born to the oldest living person. These films mean that they contain hints of sexual activity, like riding off into the sunset. They contain no violence or swearing because a little child could be watching this, These films are usually fairy tale stories.
  • PG - This means Parental guidance, this means that for a person under the age of 12 they must have a person over the age of 18 with them to watch this film. The reason there is PG is because the films contain more violence, sexual references and swearing in the film then a U rated film.
  • 12A - This means that this film has more sexual references, swearing and violence then the average 12 but not enough to become a 15 rated film, the "A" shows the viewer that this film is near the same context as a 15 film.
  • 12 - This means that anyone who is above the age of 12 can watch this film. These films contain maybe a kiss and a hint of the act of sex. They may contain some blood and swearing but still not enough to become a 15.
  • 15 - This means anyone who is above 15 can watch this film, these films would usually contain all the aspects which a 18 film would have but there would be no heavy swearing or too much gore for the viewer to feel un-comforatable watching, but non the less the film would still contain these aspects which make up the 18.
  • 18 - This means that anyone who is above 18 can watch this film, these usually contain films with heavy referances to ; Sex, swearing, violence and gore. The BBFC would classify this film as an 18 because they would believe that someone who is under 18 would not "handle" the film.
  • 18R - This means an 18 film but is "R" rated, this means that this film is based around sex, unlike the 18 classification the film relies heavily on sex and that is the main genre for the film. The rating of the "R" shows the viewer that the film relies on sex and is still an 18.
By researching about film guidlines this has given me the knowledge about the ratings of films. This has given me guidlines to my film and that how picking the rating of my film will decide my target audience. This is key to picking the right audience for my film, this has also helped my develop my knowledge in how much gore and sexual referances i can put in my film to fit the right age categories.
       I think my action thriller film will be a 18 because i have not seen any action thrillers that are below the age rating of 15. I  think the reason for choosing the 18 classiffication is because this means i can put as much gore and swearing in my film as much as i want. Many good films are 18's because there are no guidlines for the directors to stick to.

By doing this i have learnt about the BBFC and that every film has to be classified so that the wrong audience does not watch the film that might be out of there age limit and i have also learnt that with differant age groups that there are certain things in the flim that you have to incluse in order to get into that age group.

Textural analysis of The Matrix Reloaded

To make our film opening well, we will have to look at existing films in order to work out what we need to do for our film we will analyse the opening 2 minutes to "The Matrix Reloaded" which is a film to the same genre as ours;

Matrix Reloaded

Matrix reloaded

1)      The first scene you see is a black screen with green neon symbols drizzling down the screen in a vertical line, the symbols appear in different places with many symbols appearing. The music gets louder as the symbols appear and this sounds like it comes from a musical instrument that you blow into.
2)      The next scene is the symbols which appear get more and more gradual as more appear in vertical lines and these symbols are picked out in a horizontal line and spell “The Matrix” this is still in the same neon green colour but they are letters and not symbols. Then the “The Matrix” comes into the screen and behind that is the word “Reloaded” this is still in the symbols and the music gets louder and quieter (still from the same instrument).
3)      The green symbols get faster and faster moving up and down the screen but they turn to almost appear they are coming out of the camera and towards a green circle in the centre of the screen, the music is gradually getting louder.
4)      The circle in the middle of the screen gets bigger and the circle appears to be in the centre of some galaxy, like the Milky Way, the music is louder and appears more instruments have joined this single instrument.
5)      As the camera zooms out from the galaxy more and more galaxies pass the screen getting faster and faster passed the screen, this in the ends forms into one of the symbols from the start of the screen. The music has turned into a choir together producing an echo sound.
6)      The next scene the camera zooms out and more and more symbols pass the screen flying all over the screen in different positions, the music is still the same then before but hundreds of symbols are flying over the screen.
7)      The next scene the symbols are formed to make some tower like structure with the symbols interlocking with each other, this appears to be like the Empire state building, in the background many other symbols appear to be forming some structures from the symbols. The music is still the same.
8)      Carrying on from the scene before the symbols appear to be turning into cogs and there has been a base floor formed from these symbols, the music is still the same then before and the camera is orbiting around the structure in many different positions.
9)      The next scene is where the cog has been zoomed into and the cog spins with numbers appearing on the cog, this is from the symbols which are on the cog, the music has still not changed from the beginning but has gradually got quieter and then louder again.
10)  The symbols have made tubes with numbers on and the background has made tubes which intertwine each other, the symbols are starting to make some structure in the background. The music is still the same.
11)  The symbols zoom out to form a clock and the symbols dissolve from symbols to the real world and the clock is at 12 0’clock, the music comes to a halt when the clock dissolves from symbols to the real world.

Matrix reloaded

I have learnt that for our opening scene we need to grab the audience from their seats in order to keep our audience intrested in our film and set the film up with the story so that the viewer to get a grip with the film.
