The codes and convention's of Action thriller's

My first task is to research the codes and conventions of my Sub-genre which i have chosen, I will be writing about how the codes and conventions used in my sub-genre help contribute to the overall success of the film. I am researching the codes and conventions of this sub-genre because this will help me understand what i am letting myself into by choosing this sub-genre as part of my coursework, the codes and conventions will set a guideline for what I must do in my film, these are the typical features that these films often have and that distinctively set the sub-genre apart from any other, these are what the viewer will often look for to tell the genre of the film and see if the film is any good, so by researching the codes and conventions will help me a lot when filming and planning my film.

The codes and conventions in Action thriller films.

I will split this category into 3 groups;

  • Technical (camera shots & techniques)
  • Symbolic ( clothing & colours)
  • Written and audio (music)
Technical

  • Action thriller films often have a low lighting on the bad characters to show the audience that these characters are bad and they have shadows on their  face making them dark and mysterious.

  • Action thriller's have fast paced cuts between shots to keep the viewer off their seat during the heat of the action.
  • Action thriller's also have extreme close up's on the characters faces to show their expression and their emotion when all the action and tense moments are happening.
Symbolic

  • The characters often have blood on their body to show the viewer that they have been close to the action and drama which would lead to them having blood onto them.
  • The charcaters often start with nice clean clothes and end the film with their clothes being scruffy which is a symbol for their situation and they started all happy and now they are distrought which is in their clothes.

  • The characters are normally in their late teens when they are stereotypically most likely to go out partying with their friends and get into sticky situation's.

Written and Audio
  • Action thriller's have faced paced and dramatic music to help add to the tense moments to create supspense and to match the action that is happening with the music
  • The characters often scream to add affect that the position they are in they dont like and never wanted to get into that situation.
  • Action thrillers often have music to suit the characters personality, e.g when a bad guy enters the frame the viewer would hear dark music because the character is bad and this lets the viewer know.

The things i have learnt from doing this research about this sub-genre are;
  • I know what i must do to make my film fit into this sub-genre and what the target audience will exect to see in my film.
  • I have a clear mind in which sub-genre i will make for my final film.
  • I know how the camera which we are going to watch feels like and the many things we can do with the camera in terms of positioning and the quality of the image.

  1. I think that you need to sort out the page formatting here as it looks messy, there are large gaps between text and images

    I also suggest that you round off all pieces of research and planning with a bullet point list of about 3 OR 4 things that you have learned from undertaking the task and HOW this is going to help you
